Shaq's card index climbs 117.69% in six months

The largest six-month gain of any athlete Card Ladder tracks, and a debunked Lakers ownership rumor the climb predates.

Shaquille O'Neal's Card Ladder index has gone from 12,950 to 28,179 over six months, a 117.69% climb and the biggest six-month move of any athlete with at least 100 tracked cards. The sharpest single example is a 1992 Stadium Club Members Only #201 in PSA 10, which sold for $1,816.08 on August 19 after going for $849 on July 30, against a two-year median of $324.50. Some of this week's attention traces to a claim posted August 18 by The Box Score PH that O'Neal had bought the Buss family's remaining Lakers stake; that claim is false and multiple outlets have debunked it, and the real pending transaction is Josh Kushner and Bob Iger's $12.5 billion purchase, which Jeanie Buss is contesting in part. Heavy.com is careful on the causation: there is no evidence the card's buyer acted on the rumor, and the six-month climb predates it.

Topps' first true NFL flagship since 2015 hits general sale today, August 21, after a pre-order window that opened July 24. Two checklist details have landed since we put the date on the radar: the colored on-card autos carry stated rarity tiers (Blue Ink rare, Gold Ink limited to 50, Red Ink limited to 5), and the All Kings insert line, previously a Topps baseball and basketball fixture, makes its first NFL appearance with a run of 25 elite 1-of-1 cards. The 260-card base set is joined by Future Stars, Team Cards, League Leaders, Combo Cards, and a separate 100-card Rookies set, leading with Jeremiyah Love, Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon, Jordyn Tyson, and KC Concepcion alongside Drake Maye, Caleb Williams, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Waxstat lists the hobby box at $244.95, the mega box at $83.28, and the blaster at $48.28.

PSA's rundown puts the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57 first by volume, 821 fakes out of 3,285 submitted, roughly one in four. The rest of the top 10 skews heavily Pokemon, and if you are shopping a raw '86 Fleer Jordan, that one-in-four ratio is the number to keep in your head.

The Athletic reports FSG sold close to 40 percent of Liverpool to a Bezos-backed consortium

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) sold close to 40 per cent of Liverpool Football Club to the consortium including U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos. Early suggestions on both sides of the transaction indicated the purchased stake was in the range of approximately 30 per cent to one-third, but The Athletic can reveal the figure is actually much closer to 40 per cent, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. 1892 Holdings, a consortium headed up and led by Amit Bhatia, the former Queens Park Rangers co-owner who will take up the position of vice-chairman at Liverpool, has purchased around a 38 per cent shareholding in Liverpool. That is a much more significant share of the club, while there is also an option for the consortium to buy a controlling stake in the Premier League side, as per the terms of their agreement with FSG, in the next 12 months. 1892 Holdings, led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia and including Jeff Bezos, took around a 38 percent shareholding in a deal finalized August 14, well above the 30 percent to one-third that early reports on both sides had indicated. Bhatia becomes Liverpool vice-chairman, and the consortium holds an option to buy a controlling stake within the next 12 months.
